Batavia

Comments

Batavia is just one of the many names with which Jakarta was referred to in the past. Today, the name remains attached to an old colonial port that doesn’t seem to age at all, and some are trying to call Sunda Kelapa, or more simply, Jakarta Port. From its heydays pretty much everything survives here. It is a dynamic place where very old ships constantly come and go; wooden ships with high masts and crews tanned by the sea and by the salt. These are sailing ships guided only by the experience of their captains, the stars and the generosities of the sea every day they face it. The ships move around all types of goods, food and timber trough all of the islands of the Indonesian archipelago and to a few other countries in South East Asia. There, lots of men walk along wooden planks the way pirates did in the past. From there, this favorite picture of mine came from.
